Rya Jaycee Tanuvasa

Mangere

Jaycee is a creative artist, producer of big energy, love and laughter. Jaycee is refreshingly real about conventional beauty standards, gender diversity, sexuality and empowerment.

What issues are most important to you?

In the past year, my energy has gone mostly towards advocating for gender equality and building a stronger Rainbow Pacific community. History has shown that Pacific LGBTI are faced with challenges that often exceed the boundaries of westernized cultures and ideals.

In 2017, what change would you most like to see?

I’d love 2017 to be a year of open and compassionate minds. I want society to come together without the fearful boundaries of the hierarchy systems, for racial and gender equality. Creating a safer world!

What achievement are you most proud of?

I am most proud of my self-discovery. Walking in your truth can be extremely scary, but all the things I have done successfully in my personal life and career would have never come about if it wasn’t for knowing who I am, and of course, the support of my loved ones. I always look forward to finding out new things about myself as time flies, and allowing myself to make mistakes and continuously grow from them.

Who inspires you?

My hardworking parents of six, for every obvious reason why. The young people I’ve worked with, because of their hunger, bravery and ambition to take life on.

Name your favorite queer anthem or protest song.

I Am What I Am – Gloria Gaynor

First heard it in the documentary Paris is Burning, where the T-girls were singing it at the beach. Been obsessed ever since.
