Hosted by Ahakoa Te Aha to promote Māori culture during Auckland Pride, this workshop will give the participant an insight to the origins of the poi.
We will look at the traditional uses of the poi, and how it’s used in modern times. Participants will be guided through the process of making their very own poi using the modern resources of wool, plastic and foam.
After creating their poi, participants will be invited to learn a basic routine of poi actions. These simple drills are used within many haka groups to centralise their focus and get them ready for the tasks ahead.
This workshop is open to all who wish to strengthen their knowledge and understanding of Māori culture. Kai will also be provided.
