E kore e ngaro, he takere waka nui.  We will never be lost, for we are the hull of a great canoe!

Pride & Progress: The Carnival Continues

Join us on Ponsonby Road at the later time of 7.30pm on Saturday 25 February for the largest and loudest carnival of change and diversity in Aotearoa New Zealand!

A spectacular showcase for our Rainbow communities (Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, Takatāpui, Fa’afafine, Intersex, Queer), the 2017 Auckland Pride Parade is all about progress and movement.

In the thirty years since Homosexual Law Reform, our Rainbow communities have accomplished many things, legally, socially, culturally. Gay sex no longer breaks New Zealand laws. Workplace discrimination is banned. Same-sex marriages are now common.

But, in these times of uncertainty, all gains are fragile – and very real issues remain that affect us all.

Homophobia continues to exist. Our young people are still not safe. We don’t enjoy the benefits of health equity. HIV/AIDS has still not been beaten. Women do not have pay equity. Gender identity isn’t included in the Human Rights Act and reassignment surgeries are woefully underfunded. Neighbouring countries still choose to deny our rights.

We cannot afford the luxury of complacency. The momentum of change must continue!

The 2017 Auckland Pride Parade will celebrate our most stunning achievements – but also turn the spotlight on issues that obstruct our march towards full equality.

Together, we will commemorate the great work of the past. Together, we will party in the present. Together, we will move forward into the future!

Tēnā koutou, tēnā koutou, tēnā koutou katoa.

Who can participate?

We welcome applications from individuals, groups or organisations from within New Zealand’s Rainbow communities – whether the entry is focused on messages related to the Rainbow communities or not.

Applications from individuals, groups or organisations that are not part of New Zealand’s Rainbow communities are also welcomed – provided the entry communicates a clear, supportive and positive message relating to the Rainbow communities and the 2017 Parade theme.

We encourage commercial organisations that wish to participate in the Auckland Pride Parade to show their support by partnering with local groups from within the Rainbow communities.
